Welcome to the September 2022 issue of ev0ke: witchcraft*paganism*lifestyle. This is a special issue that focuses on the theme of games! That’s right: table top roleplaying games, interactive stories, video games, and more! Throughout this issue, you will find discussions and analyses of how ancient and modern Paganism/polytheism interacts with, influences, and is influenced by games.
First up is ev0king the Green by Scriba, in which they discuss the herb chamomile and its many uses (though please take note of any warnings regarding its use). Then it’s on to ev0king the Moon, where guest contributor Ryan McClain discusses Abnoba, the Celtic Goddess of the wilderness. And in ev0king the Question, regular contributors and guest authors discuss the relationship (positive, negative, and ambivalent) between popular culture and contemporary Paganism/polytheism. In Fiction, Rebecca Buchanan offers the second in her three part psychic/mystery adventure, “Madeleine Green and the Ghost of Flight 283.” And in Reviews, we take a look at Gutter Mage by JS Kelley, A Hint of Faery by T. Thorn Coyle, and Raising Little Witchlings: Parenting the Witch Way by Amanda Wilson (guest reviewed by the wonderful Eve Morton).
Then it’s on to the Members Only section! In Essays, Ashley Nicole Hunter has part nine of her series on the twelve sacred trees of North America, this time focusing on the chestnut; followed by “Using Games as Magical Tools for Reinvention and Manifestation.” Guest contributor Edward VanDerJagt, in turn, guides us back in time to the ancient Middle East and “The Royal Game of Ur.” In Fiction, Rebecca Buchanan offers the conclusion of her fantasy/murder mystery, “Honey in the Snow.” And in Lifestyle, we have “Magic and Mystery and Mayhem, Oh My! Six Pagan-Friendly Interactive Story Games — Revisited” by Rebecca Buchanan; and “The Magic and Spirits of the Dragon Age Franchise” by Ashley Nicole Hunter.
